LOCATION
Southern Yucatan - Mexico

SEASON
Year-Round

CAPACITY
Maximum of 16 anglers per week

SPECIES
Bonefish, permit, tarpon, barracuda, jacks, snapper, more

GENERAL INFORMATION
Located on the very southern tip of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo is the small fishing village of Xcalak (Ish-ca-lack) and waters of Chetumal Bay. The largest bay in the entire Yucatan, Chetumal Bay is nearly twice the size of Ascension Bay, its neighbor to the north. This area is home to endless flats and healthy populations of line-burning Yucatan bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, jacks, and many other

LENGTH OF STAY
Standard package is a six fishing days and seven nights. (Saturday to Saturday) Shorter, custom packages and mid-week packages can also be arranged.

THE FISHING
Over the past ten years Costa de Cocos has discovered and pioneered a vast network of largely unexplored and unfished bonefish, tarpon, and permit flats in Chetumal Bay and in the area's mangrove ringed inland lagoons.
They also have the ability to fish ocean-side areas with more permit and bonefish on deeper turtle grass flats. Twenty-nine very large, productive flats and lagoon systems have now been mapped, with new areas continuing to be explored. Like many of the bodies of water in this part of Mexico, Chetumal Bay offers fantastic diversity with regards to species. Within 100 yards of a single shoreline flat one has the opportunity to cast at bonefish, permit and tarpon. The numerous natural channels throughout the bay provide textbook habitat for numerous species. In certain times of the year the snook leave their mangrove sanctuaries to warm up on the flats and feed, giving anglers prime opportunities to target the "largemouth of the flats." This is truly super-slam territory!

This is an excellent fishery for all skill levels, from the novice angler looking to cut their teeth daily on bonefish, or the serious angler searching for shots at 30 pound-plus permit. On calm days the ocean side flats and drop offs can provide excellent sight fishing opportunities for permit schools and large migratory tarpon. If the wind does become a problem, the lagoons behind Xcalak provide shelter as well as productive fishing for baby tarpon and snook. In addition to fishing from the 23 foot pangas, Chetumal also offers some of the best wade fishing in the Yucatan.

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT OFFERED
All boats used by the lodge are 23-foot pangas that accommodate two fishermen and a guide. Each is constructed with a forward casting deck, tandem passenger seats and rod racks.

THE LODGING
The resort is set amidst picturesque coconut groves at the end of a long road. The Yucatan jungle, rich with wildlife, is the lodge's back yard, and the Caribbean Sea is literally on the front steps. At Costa de Cocos your overall comfort is the priority. Guests stay in one of 16 individual private cabanas, built of traditional stonework, rich tropical woods and topped with native thatch roofs. Each cabana has a private bathroom with hot water, dual ceiling fans, 110 AC voltage outlets, and daily maid service.

After a long day of fishing, you can relax on the lodge’s main deck, enjoying a cold drink and fresh appetizers from the kitchen. The lodge's fully stocked bar and cold cervezas are open and available anytime. A full continental breakfast is served every morning, and the restaurant stays open for lunch for those that wish to return to lodge mid-day for an afternoon break and siesta. Dinners at the lodge are four course meals with a Caribbean and Mexican touch. You'll appreciate the lodge's dedicated and impressive environmental conscience. Costa de Cocos provides purified bottled water in each cabana for drinking. With regards to power generation, 24-hour electrical power is generated by the wind.
