LOCATION
Espiritu Santo Bay – Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

SEASON
October through July

CAPACITY
Total capacity for Playa Blanca is 20 guests per week (12-14 anglers and 6-8 non-anglers)

SPECIES
Bonefish, tarpon, permit, snook, barracuda, jacks, snapper

GENERAL INFORMATION
For anglers looking to combine a premier saltwater fly fishing experience with a secluded tropical beach vacation, Playa Blanca is the perfect destination. Located approximately 130 miles south of Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula, Playa Blanca is situated on a secluded private island with direct access to one of the largest protected reserves in the world.

LENGTH OF STAY
Standard package is a six day / seven night package (Saturday to Saturday) although shorter packages can be arranged.

THE FISHING
The waters of Espiritu Santo provide the ideal habitat for a wide variety of sea life. In essence, it is a great home for game fish! The vast estuary and flats system and the adjacent reef provide the infrastructure for the area’s pristine and highly productive fishery. It has been said that this part of the Caribbean boasts the world's largest population of permit, and as many as twenty have been boated “on the fly” in a single week. It is not unusual to see – within casting range – twenty-five to fifty permit in a single day, their sickle-shaped fins piercing the surface of the waters near Laguna Isla Pobre and Tres Reyes. As for bonefish, the waters of Espiritu Santo are loaded with large schools that provide consistent action all year long. These fish average three to four pounds, but larger bones are caught on a regular basis. And, while the area is known for its fine bone and permit fishing, you can target numerous other fish species as well, including a large number of tarpon that inhabit the mangroves and lagoons of the area. The waters surrounding Playa Blanca offer the light-tackle saltwater fisherman one of the most diverse selections of game fish in the world. When conditions are right, an angler can cast to bonefish, tarpon, snook, permit, jacks, barracuda, cubera snapper, mutton snapper, sharks, and several different reef species in a single week of fishing. This kind of angling opportunity can only be found in a few locations throughout the world. The daily fishing schedule is flexible, so you’ll want to discuss your plans with the lodge staff every day. Most anglers choose a schedule that takes advantage of the best time to spot bonefish and permit on the flats, generally between 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM.

The abundance of marine and wildlife in the Sian Ka'an is hard to imagine until you have seen it for yourself. You can find over 325 species of birds, four different marine turtles (Loggerheads, Green Sea Turtles, Hawksbills and Leatherbacks) and fish species too numerous to name! The reef itself supplies food and shelter to a huge variety of baitfish and small crustaceans, which in turn attract larger predators. The reef also protects the shore-side fishery from full ocean swells; the coral heads absorb the brunt of the waves, allowing the flats to remain relatively calm even if the reef is being pounded by a storm swell.

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT OFFERED
Most boats used by the lodge are 16-foot Dolphin flats skiffs that accommodate two fishermen and a guide. Each is constructed with a forward casting deck, tandem passenger seats, rod racks, and a poling platform.

THE LODGING
Every room at Playa Blanca is a "room with a view"... a beautiful view. Playa Blanca's accommodations are single standing or double cabanas. Some rooms are available with two queen size beds and designer private baths. Decor is simple yet stylish. All rooms at Playa Blanca have a "beach" view and access to miles of white sand beach within steps of your front door. Playa Blanca has no neighbors, only empty tropical paradise as far as the eye can see. Blue sky, white sand, swaying palm trees, and turquoise water. If you do have an urge to mix with other guests, the hotel's bar and restaurant provide the perfect spot to mingle and to talk about all the things you did (or did not do) each day. The bar is well stocked and the service is unsurpassed. As you might expect, the chef's specialty is fresh seafood – simply, skillfully and artfully prepared.

HOW TO GET THERE
All guests should book flights to Cancun, Mexico. Guests making their own flight reservations must plan to arrive in Cancun no later than 2:30 p.m. and schedule their return flight no earlier than 12 p.m. noon in order to make connections with the air charter. From there, Playa Blanca will provide a private air charter which will fly you directly to the lodge. Each plane can accommodate 4 to 5 guests plus the pilot. The flight to and from Cancun to the island is approximately 120 miles or 55 minutes. At the Playa Blanca main dock the lodge staff will greet you, and you will be transferred by open vehicle a short 25 minutes down the beach to the Playa Blanca main instillations.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
All U.S. citizens are required to have a valid passport that does not expire within 6 months of trips dates. Please be sure that your passport has at least two blank, unstamped pages remaining in back, and that it is not torn, delaminated, or damaged in any way. No visas or inoculations are required for U.S. citizens. A Mexican departure tax is payable at the airport when leaving Mexico. Some airlines include this as a prepaid part of your ticket. Please check with your travel agent or carrier to verify this.

NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES
The entire setting at Playa Blanca is the perfect antidote to civilization. Non-anglers can plan a different adventure every single day, from exploring Mayan ruins, beachcombing, kayaking in secluded lagoons, snorkeling the reef, watching turtles nest on the beach, or doing absolutely nothing at all except leaning back and sipping a cool refreshing tropical drink. The lodge itself is in the center of one of the world's largest protected wild areas, the Sian Ka'an, Biosphere Reserve. This pristine reserve covers over 1.5 million acres and completely surrounds Playa Blanca. Sian Ka'an has been designated by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site. The reserve contains 22 registered archaeological sites. Two of these are just down the beach from Playa Blanca. The abundance of marine and wildlife in Sian Ka'an is hard to imagine until you have seen it for yourself. You can find over 325 species of birds, from Hummingbirds to the rare six foot tall Jabiru, the world's largest flighted bird. In the back of the bay are manatee.
