LENGTH OF STAY
Trips and itineraries of any length can be arranged. All trips with The Reel Baja are completely customized and built around your schedule, fishing preferences, time of year, and desired species.
THE FISHING
The East Cape region of Baja Sur Mexico has remained a rich and diverse environment that even today supports more than 850 species of fish. The Sea of Cortez features spectacular green and blue waters set against a majestic and awesome desert landscape. The protected waters of the Sea of Cortez are typically a much calmer nautical experience than fishing the offshore waters of the Pacific or Atlantic oceans.
Our outfitters in Baja specialize in targeting gamefish from three distinctive zones in the Sea of Cortez: the beach, inshore and offshore. Beach fishing consists of accessing prime areas via four wheel drive vehicles and then walking to locate and sight cast to fish close to shore. With this type of beach fishing, you are typically targeting roosterfish, jack crevalle, pompano, ladyfish and many other species depending on the time of year and the conditions. Inshore pursuits are performed from fast and agile pangas or small boats that are able to cruise in shallow depths and locate fish along reefs and shore breaks. Fishing inshore typically keys in on jack crevalle, roosterfish, pargo, sierra mackerel and other exotic species depending on the time of year. Offshore fishing utilizes both pangas and cruiser-style boats to pursue large gamefish such as striped marlin, blue marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado and bonito.
The fishing in the Sea of Cortez is still dominated by local family fishermen and adventuresome sportsmen. Both have garnered a certain love and respect for the prized resource and work diligently to protect it. Both local captains and North American anglers have united to practice catch and release to ensure a long and rich resource for many generations to come. The local captains and deck hands that Yellow Dog works with in Baja are instinctual fisherman following the lessons learned from fathers, uncles and grandfathers. Spending time on the water with these born-and-raised fisherman will take you back to a genre reminiscent of a time and place so well captured by the pen of Hemingway and his accounts of time spent on the Sea of Cortez. The real reward of fishing with the East Cape region is the opportunity to step back in time, leave the stress and pace behind and to enjoy a rich and unspoiled diverse fishing environment found nowhere else in the world. You will come away from your East Cape experience with new appreciation, new skills and a new passion for a unique and beautiful corner of the world.

NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES
For non-anglers or those looking to take a day off from fishing there are a number of activities and attractions that are available when visiting the Baja Peninsula. While Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo offer some extraordinary beaches, shopping, and night life there are also a myriad of outdoor activities that you can take advantage of. The East Cape is home to some of the best windsurfing and kite surfing on the planet, and the Sea of Cortez offers world-class snorkeling. Since the entire area is sparsely populated, cruising the beaches and relaxing in the sun and sand is a great way to spend the day. There are miles of open, undeveloped beaches perfect for exploring. If you are interested in organizing a side trip to nearby villages or towns, sightseeing in Can San Lucas or San Jose del Cabo, or participating in any other non-angling activities during your visit, please let us know prior to your departure. We will be happy to make recommendations and take care of any necessary arrangements.
