GENERAL INFORMATION
Globe Trouters is located on the North end of the South Island, in what is known as the Nelson region. Close to several of the most popular National Parks in the country - Nelson Lakes, Kahurangi, and Abel Tasman National Parks - this region has become one of the top destinations for travelers and destination anglers in the country.

LENGTH OF STAY
While we can accommodate trips and itineraries of any length, we suggest a trip length of at least a week to ten days. With a long international flight of 14+ hours, you will not want to rush home!

THE FISHING
The fishing in this part of New Zealand is in many ways much more like hunting than typical trout fishing. And, while stalking wild browns and rainbows in the exceptionally clear waters of this region can be one of fly fishing’s more challenging scenarios, it is almost always worth the effort. The Nelson area has a very large number of pristine rivers boasting wild browns and rainbows that average 3 to 5 pounds. More often than not you will be fishing in totally privacy, completely alone with just you and your guide. Each trout will present a new set of challenges, be it casting and presenting your fly in just the right spot, or merely seeing the fish that your guide has spotted for you. Typically, your guide locates and spots the fish, moves you into a stealthy position, and sets you up for the shot. This kind of team effort used to catch "Mr. Big" is the classic "Kiwi fishing experience." Fly size will be larger and tippets can usually be heavier for these trout. Since giant cicadas, mayflies, and caddis make up the majority of the New Zealand trout's diet, you will often fish with big dries or medium sized classics like Parachute Adams, caddis, or Royal Wulffs. If fishing subsurface, you will typically nymph "kiwi" style – a method that includes an indicator fly (a yarn indicator with a hook in it) with double tungsten nymphs below. You will always be fishing to trout that have been spotted, versus “blind casting” into riffles or runs.

When fishing with Globe Trouters, access to the rivers can range from simply walking out the front door of the sheep station where you may be staying, to helicopter flights into the remote backcountry. The guided helicopter trips – though a bit more money – offer the option of putting you on rivers with no footprints and large, willing trout that rarely see an angler. These “heli-trips” can be arranged on a daily basis or for multi-day camping excursions. Weather is always a factor when it comes to fishing, but having the helicopter at your fingertips gives you the flexibility to move quickly when a particular river has become un-fishable (offering you more options when the rivers blow out!)

THE LODGING
For backcountry wilderness trips, Globe Trouters utilizes a variety of lodging options, including sheep stations (wilderness ranches,) backcountry huts, and tent camping. All camping equipment, sleeping bags, and other gear are provided in each package.

HOW TO GET THERE
International airlines such as Quantus and Air New Zealand provide daily flights from Los Angeles (LAX) non-stop to Auckland, New Zealand on the North Island. These flights depart LAX in the evening and arrive 14 hours later the following morning in Auckland. Due to crossing the International Date Line, you actually arrive two days later then when you departed, but return to the U.S. earlier then when you leave on your return flight! From Auckland, domestic flights to Nelson (a 1.5 hour flight) or Christchurch (a 3 hour flight) leave throughout the day. Expect total roundtrip airfare to New Zealand to cost around $1,500.00 per person in U.S. dollars.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
A valid passport is required for all visitors to New Zealand and must be valid for at least six (6) months beyond the duration of your stay. Citizens of the U.S., the British Commonwealth, and Canada, are NOT required to have Visas. Upon leaving New Zealand there is a $25.00 (N.Z. dollar) departure tax.

NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES
Trekking (hiking), sheep station tours, bunji-jumping, river jet-boat tours, rafting, mountain and tour biking, bird watching, horseback riding, sea kayaking, surfing, fiordland tours, golf, tennis, beachcombing, sailing, shopping, vineyard tours and wine tasting, ecotourism packages, and visiting Maori cultural centers are just some of the many activities available for the non-angler visiting New Zealand.
