THE FISHING
As New Orleans and its surrounding marshland continues to emerge as a world class fly fishing destination, there is a mystique about the city itself, the waters surrounding the "Big Easy" and the gamefish that inhabit those waters. To say that the shallow-water fishery just south of New Orleans is unique would be an understatement. It would be like saying that the food in New Orleans is "pretty good" or that Mardi Gras is a "decent" party. No matter which way you cut it, the shallow-water site-fishing for redfish in Southeast Louisiana rivals any sight fishing, anywhere. Whether you are an "old salt" or just venturing out of the coldwater creeks for the first time, the marshes of Southern Louisiana boast a wealth of angling opportunities for anglers of all skill levels. Louisiana Flywater offers individuals and groups the opportunity to fish, eat and enjoy Louisiana life during your stay just like they do year-round. Their guides live in Louisiana, fish in Louisiana, love Louisiana, and can't wait to share it with you. From the time you step off the plane until the time you step back on, you'll be catered to with an unmatched level of Southern Hospitality that includes luxury transportation, plantation lodging on the banks of the Mississippi just minutes from the fishing grounds, and authentic Cajun cuisine that rivals anything in the area. Oh yeah. Did we mention that this also includes year-round world-class saltwater fly-fishing? Louisiana Flywater of Louisiana specializes in 3-day, 4-night individual and group packages, although they can accommodate any other itineraries or requests.

Although the primary target and major draw to Southeast Louisiana for fly fishing enthusiasts is the red drum or “redfish,” other species such as speckled trout, black drum, sheepshead and even Jack Crevalle can be targeted in the in-shore waters of this amazingly versatile fishery.

All guides working with Louisiana Flywater specialize in sight fishing shallow water flats. Your days will start early so that you can be on the flats as the redfish begin their morning patrol. You will fish a variety of water as the interior marsh is an ever-changing maze of bayous, bays and ponds, most of which will hold redfish year-round. It is not uncommon that on any given day, you will be fishing water that is shallower than two feet and sometimes as shallow as five to six inches. Often, the redfish will put on a great show by “tailing” as they search the marsh bottom for food. In this act, they hunt nose-down, exposing their tail above the water’s surface, a phenomenon that can be easily seen by the angler. At times, when in extremely shallow water, you will see the entire back of the redfish as he patrols the “skinny” edges of the flat. The local guides call these fish “crawlers” as the fish appears to be almost crawling across the shallow marsh bottom. Most of the time, however, you will be looking for fish that are swimming just beneath the surface. Much of this fishing is at very close range and 20, 30 and 40 foot casts are much more common than 50, 60 or 70 feet casts.

Aggressive, accurate casting is the key and these close quarters encounters are extremely exciting. If your knees don’t start knocking when you see a big redfish bearing down on your fly less than 20 feet from the boat and then see the white of the inside of his mouth when he opens up to eat your fly, then maybe you should take up golf!

THE LODGING
Anglers fishing on multi-day packages stay at the Woodland Plantation, a classic, historical operation that is sure to be as much a part of your experience as the fishing. Nestled on the banks of the Mississippi River, the plantation welcomes guests with the classic look and feel that one would associate with old plantation living. At Woodland, they’ve taken the term “Southern Hospitality” and made it their mission statement. You will eat well, drink well (if you choose), laugh well and sleep well during your stay with. The setting of the plantation alone will immediately take away all of your worries. You will be treated like family, and by the end your first evening, you will know everyone there by name and everyone will know you. Enjoy sitting in rocking chairs on the porch before and after meals with a cup of coffee or an adult beverage to sip, sharing in the history of the Woodland property as well as the memories made that day on the water. Single occupants can then find their way to their private rooms at their leisure and double occupants to their shared quarters. The double occupancy rooms do, of course, have multiple beds, and each room features its own bathroom with private shower. The only comments that we get as often as exclamations about how unbelievable the fishing is are those comments about how much our guests enjoyed the food, the fun and wonderful nights of sleep at the Woodland Plantation. For an image of Woodland Plantation, grab a bottle of Southern Comfort.  The famous Plantation has graced the label since 1934.

The food at the Plantation is amazing. Breakfast each day will feature a full Southern-style offering with fresh fruit and coffee as well. Lunches will be simple but tasty sandwiches packed as boat lunches. Dinners will be as memorable as the fishing with authentic Cajun cuisine including dishes such as fresh-shucked oysters on the half shell, homemade gumbo, fried gulf shrimp, blackened Redfish and other fresh gulf fish, bread pudding with whiskey sauce and many other fresh delicacies, depending on what’s in season in Southeast Louisiana.
