LOCATION
Los Roques, Venezuela (92 miles off the mainland)

SEASON
Year-Round

CAPACITY
Sightcast can accommodate 12 anglers at a times

SPECIES
Bonefish, tarpon, permit, jacks and more

GENERAL INFORMATION
If you’re and angler looking for very large bonefish, large numbers of bonefish, and fishing scenarios that revolve almost entirely around wade fishing, the Los Roques and Sight Cast should strongly be considered for your next fishing adventure.

LENGTH OF STAY
There is no set turnaround day with Sight Cast, and no minimum-stay requirement. Trips of any length can be arranged.

THE FISHING
Islas Los Roques consists of 40-50 major islands located 92 miles north of Caracas. If you count all of the small islets and coral outcroppings in the area, there are over 300 islands in the chain, something that puts the potential size of the fishing area into perspective. While some of the flats are quite large and reminiscent of something you might find in the Bahamas, most are 70-100 feet wide with very little coral and a good amount of turtle grass – ideal for wading.

The flats are healthy and loaded with baitfish, and the tides normally fluctuate less than a foot per day. The number of tailing bonefish found on the pancake flats and “classic” bonefish flats of Los Roques can be astounding. Other times, anglers can expect to walk and wade the beaches, looking for large, cruising bonefish that travel in pairs or small schools feeding on minnows and baitfish. The area also offers a number of shallow lagoons that at times can provide exceptional action for cruising, deeper-water bonefish. These lagoons are primarily fished during high tide stages when other flats are too deep for the best fishing. It is not unusual for anglers fishing Los Roques to catch between 10 and 20 bonefish per day. Most bonefish on Los Roques will average 4 pounds, and larger fish are quite common. Although Los Roques is primarily a bonefish destination, you may encounter other species as well. Be prepared with a second rod, fully rigged for cruising barracuda, tarpon, jacks, permit, or mackerel.

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT OFFERED
Sight Cast operates 28 ft. center-consol boats with new 75 HP and 100 HP Yamaha engines. These seaworthy boats provide a safe and comfortable ride to and from the flats. Remember that each boat is staffed by both a fishing guide and a captain/boat driver, and that 98% of the bonefishing on Los Roques is done while wading. As far as rental/demo rods and reels, fishing equipment and tackle is available on the island on a very limited basis. We suggest, however, that anglers bring their own gear.

THE LODGING
Lodging is at Posada Acuarela, arguably the nicest accommodations found anywhere on the island. Acuarela is a 5 minute walk from the airport and a 1 minute walk from the beach. The lodge features 11 private rooms, all with air conditioning, private baths, and warm-to-hot water. The food is very, very good, and all meals are on par with what you might expect in an upscale, high-end restaurant. The lodge is very adept at catering to anglers, and the manager/owner is on site to ensure that the level of service and amenities are first rate.

Full payment is due 90 days prior to departure.

HOW TO GET THERE
Accessed by daily, direct commercial service from the mainland, Los Roques is easier to reach than most people realize. Caracas, Venezuela's capital, is home to over 7 million people and is served by nonstop flights from Houston, Dallas, Miami and many other European and U.S. cities. If you arrive in Caracas before noon on a weekend, you can still get to the island that day. If not, you overnight at the Eurobuilding Express Hotel (a five-minute drive from the airport) and fly to El Gran Roque early the next morning, arriving in time for breakfast at the lodge and a full day of fishing. You can also enjoy a full day of fishing on your day of departure. Keep in mind that when you overnight on the mainland, you are not staying in Caracas; you are staying in the coastal city of La Guaira.  Flight departure times from Caracas to Los Roques change constantly, but there are alwys several flights a day coming and going to the island (morning, afternoon and evening).

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
A valid passport is required for all visitors to Venezuela and must be valid for at least six (6) months beyond the duration of your stay. Citizens of the U.S. and the British Commonwealth are currently NOT required to have Visas.

NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES
Non-fishing activities include combing solitary beaches, visiting the sea turtle research center, snorkeling, and birding (you can get incredibly close to the island’s nesting birds.) There are also a couple of small dive shops on the island offering scuba excursions, as well as rentals for kitesurfing, windsurfing, snorkeling and sea kayaking. The distinctive rock-like peaks that form the backdrop of El Gran Roque (for which the archipelago is named) are also an easy hike. Each day, the lodge will be happy to transport non-anglers (at no additional charge) to private, solitary beaches with an umbrella, beach chairs and a loaded cooler.
